有隻蚊子飛到獅子那里，說：“我一點兒也不害怕你，我甚至都不承認你我力量相當。你的力量究竟有多大？你只會用爪子抓、用牙齒咬，就像一個發脾氣的女人一樣，除此之外，就沒有什麽了。可是，我卻比你厲害得多。若是你不相信，不妨來比試比試。”蚊子嗡嗡地吹著小喇叭，猛沖上前，在獅子的鼻子上咬了一口。獅子感覺到被蚊子叮了一口，馬上就用爪子去抓，結果卻劃傷了自己的鼻子，流了好多血。獅子最終沒能傷害到蚊子。於是，蚊子又嗡嗡叫著，興高采烈地凱旋而歸。然而，他很快就陷入了蜘蛛的網中，被一隻蜘蛛抓住吃了，在戰勝了百獸之王後，卻被隻隻不起眼的蜘蛛消滅了。

THE GNAT AND THE LION
　　A Gnat once went up to a Lion and said，“I am not in the least afraid ofyou：I don’t even allow that you are a match for me in strength What does your strength amount to after all?That you can scratch with your claws and bite with your teeth-just like a woman in a tempe-and nothing more.But I'm stronger than you：if you don’t believe it，let US fight and see.”So saying，the Gnat sounded his horn，and darted in and bit the Lion on the nose.When the Lion felt the sting，in his haste to crush him he scratched his nose badly，and made it bleed，but failed victory.Presently,however,it got entangled in a spider’S web，and was caught and eaten by the spider，thus falling prey to an insignificant insect after having triumphed over the King of the Beasts.
